The Intern Experience, A Win-Win for All!

Mahoney has hired interns to work during our busy season from January through April for decades.  It is a great opportunity for the intern to learn more about accounting, our firm, and working in public accounting.  It is also one of our best hiring tools.  Many of our current employees started out as interns!

This summer, we decided to try something different and hire summer interns.  We had three interns, two on our Assurance Solutions Team and one on our Tax Solutions Team.  I sat down with Lea Newman, one of our Assurance Solutions Team interns, to talk about her summer at Mahoney. 

Lea is a junior at University of Wisconsin – River Falls.  This was her first internship and she really enjoyed it.  She worked primarily on nonprofit clients and was able to work at the offices of a number of clients.  She liked the variety and getting out in the field.  Prior to her internship, she had not taken an auditing class, so she said the internship was a big learning experience.  She mostly learned on the job as she worked on various clients. 

She wasn’t sure what to expect but was really glad she did an internship and found everyone at Mahoney was very willing to help her and answer her questions.  Lea said this was her first professional job and she felt she really grew personally by getting out into the “real world”. 

Lea is currently back in school full-time and working 20 hours per week at Mahoney.  Lea said she is so happy that she can continue working at Mahoney.  She has also enjoyed many of the team building events we do and has continued coming to those even while in school.  We are so happy to have you with us, Lea!
