By Roz Allyson, CPA , Managing Partner
February is typically known as the “Month of Love.” Many times the focus is on the love for our family and friend relationships. But loving our job is also very important. I like this quote from Steve Jobs: “Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.”
I started working at Mahoney in 1993 as an auditor. I have held various roles and responsibilities over the years and became managing partner in 2015. I have loved my work since the beginning. I have also loved the people I work with, both clients and Mahoney team members. The thing that makes me love my work is when I feel that I am making a difference in the lives and well-being of others. I feel this is when my work truly has meaning and importance. As managing partner, I regularly see the impact made on our clients, our people and our community.
Being happy at work and loving what you do can boost performance. People who enjoy their jobs are more likely to be motivated, optimistic, learn faster, make fewer mistakes and become better decision makers.
Some added benefits to loving your job include the following:
Improved energy: When we do things we love, we are energized. That energy can make us more productive and of course happier all the way around.
Better health: We all know that stress can negatively impact our health. When we love what we do, our stress levels are lower, thus improving our immune system and creating healthier physical bodies.
Stronger relationships: When we bring home stress from the workday, we may take it out on our loved ones. When you are happy at work, there is much less stress and much more joy. That positive, joyful attitude comes home with you and can improve relationships with family members, neighbors and friends.
A strong desire to grow and learn: When we feel good about what we are doing in the workplace, we are often inspired to get better at what we do. We tend to want to learn more, push ourselves outside our comfort zone and have better attitudes about learning opportunities.
These are just a few things that can come as a result of loving what you do in your professional life.
