Mahoney DEI Assessment Shows Progress and Opportunities

The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) works to encourage and promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within the CPA profession. The AICPA National Commission on Diversity and Inclusion (NCDI) was formed in 2012 to be champions that influence the accounting profession to make diversity, equity, and inclusion a priority in areas of recruitment, certification, and advancement of ethnic minorities.

As a woman-led firm with a focus on attracting and retaining the best and brightest talent, Mahoney has participated in the AICPA’s Accounting Inclusion Maturity Model (AIMM) assessment. The AIMM assessment is used to evaluate the degree to which our firm follows leading practices in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). The AIMM has four main components representing internal and external aspects of DEI:  workforce, workplace, marketplace, and supplier/community. 

The results of the assessment showed that we are emerging into a fuller understanding of DEI at Mahoney. We have established the fundamentals of diversity and inclusion awareness and are now expanding and starting to build practices that include our clients, community, and people. This assessment has helped us identify untapped aspects of DEI within Mahoney so we know where to target our efforts as  we build out a r proactive strategy. We recognize that additional efforts on our part will improve the potential for our firm and industry to be a more accessible and welcoming environment for future accountants and professionals.

Currently, we are focusing on the areas of Workplace (Culture) and Workforce (People). We have formed a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee. This committee is composed of team members from all departments within Mahoney. Our initiatives in the area of Workplace include:

• • Sharing more information about our DEI efforts and where we currently stand in relation to current DEI data
  • Sharing resources, webinars, trainings, etc. to build awareness with all team members
  • Posting blogs about our DEI efforts or personal stories
  • Conducting a forum about what is acceptable and not acceptable (e.g. microaggressions, communication) to help build awareness and support changing behaviors

Our initiatives in the area of Workforce continue to focus on recruiting and building relationships with high schools and universities, encouraging careers in accounting among all students and expanding our future pool of talented candidates.
